I wanted to migrate some metadata from an existing installation of OBIEE 12.2.1.1 to the Oracle Analytics Server 6.4 I had installed in a VM. The process is rather straightforward and consists in exporting the metadata from the OBIEE 12c installation into a .bar file and later to import it from the OAS console. We are going to see how I did it in this small tutorial .

An OBIEE 12c server installation provides a script that can be used to generate a “.bar” archive file including the server metadata. The “.bar” file can be used to copy the metadata from one server to an other or, in this example, to migrate them to an Oracle Analytics Server 6.4. This script was named “export_service_instance.sh” with OBIEE version 12.2.1.1 used in this tutorial and it is named “exportarchive.sh” with OBIEE version 12.2.1.4.
First I opened a shell on the system where the OBIEE 12.2.1.1 server was installed. Then I navigated to the “bitools/bin” folder were the “export_service_instance.sh” script was located (“/app/oracle/biee/user_projects/domains/bi/bitools/bin/” in the following screenshot). And finally I executed the script with two arguments. The first argument value was “ssi” and it corresponded to the service key name used by the OBIEE12c server (it is the default name) and the second one was the name of the “.bar“archive that would be generated: “/home/oracle/export_obiee12c.bar” in this example.

The shell script asked me to enter and to confirm the RPD password before starting to generate the “.bar” file. The generation took a few minutes on this server.

I copied the “.bar” file to my computer and I connected as an administrator to the Oracle Analytics Home page. I clicked the “Navigator” button on the top left and I selected “Console“:

I scrolled down until I found the “Configuration and Administration” section and I clicked the “Snapshots” button:

It opened a new browser tab with a list of existing snapshots (an empty list in the following screenshot). I clicked the three dots button on the top right to open a menu and I selected “Import Snapshot“:

It opened the “Import Snapshot” window. I clicked the “Select” button to select the “export_obiee12c.bar” file that had been generated previously and I entered the Snapshot Password:

I clicked the “Import” button to upload the file. The process took a few seconds with a “Encrypting snapshot” status:

After that, I clicked the three dot button on the right of the snapshot and I selected the “Restore” menu to restore the metadata contained in the file.

The “Restore Snapshot” window opened with a description of the snapshot content. I provided the “Restore reason” and selected a “Custom” restore as I didn’t want to restore everything from the OBIEE12c snapshot.

I only wanted to import some of the server metadata: the .RPD file and the web catalog including the Dashboards but not the Application Roles or credentials and therefore I unselected them. As you can see in the following screenshot, this snapshot had no content for the entries identified with a yellow warning triangle. I clicked the “Restore” button to start the restore process.

The wizard displayed a warning and offered one last chance to cancel the restore process (It can overwrite the definition of existing users, credentials or metadata so be careful as it can damage your current installation). I clicked the “OK” button to confirm that I wanted to restore the selected metadata.

The restore process took a few minutes during which its status was “Restoring“.

The status changed to “Last restored” after a few minutes. I checked that the Oracle Analytics Server was now using a new RPD file that had been migrated from in the OBIEE12c snapshot. And I checked that the Webcatalog metadata incluing the Dashboards had been imported too.

Perfect, I would still have to modify some RPD repository variables and Connection Pools in order to be able to see the Dashboards and their data but at the RPD and webcatalog had been migrated successfully.
Conclusion: the migration of OBIEE 12c metadata to an Oracle Analytics Server 6.4 is a rather straightforward process that allows you to quickly migrate OBIEE12c dashboards to OAS.
